"A Website created to showcase the talents of Patchwork & Quilting students living and working in the Bristol & South West area"

  How will I learn?

Through instruction, demonstration and most importantly - practice! For the second and third terms students will need a sewing machine. I have some available to use in class, but it is preferable for students to have their own. However it is not necessary to purchase a sewing machine in advance of class, I can offer advice on what functions are useful for patchwork & quilting.

Do I need any previous knowledge or experience?

Sewing skills are useful, but for new students prior knowledge of patchwork & quilting is not essential. An enthusiasm for sewing and taking pleasure in exploring new ideas and techniques is all that is necessary!
Note: For students taking a second year, you can build on existing skills and tackle variations of the different techniques!

How much time will it take?

Time devoted to working on samples is up to the individual, but as a guide new techniques started in class will generally be finished off at home. Some patchwork and quilting techniques take longer than others and students should allow a few hours each week to complete work and make the most of the course.

What support is available?

The tutor will support students with learning related to the subject, including handouts for each technique and give advice on where to purchase materials etc... If students have any specific needs such as learning, financial or disability difficulties and you would like to speak to me (Lynne) in confidence, please contact me.

The Linnaeus Study Room at the Botanic Garden is on level access and there are disabled facilities and car-parking space.

What should I bring to the first meeting?

A similar copy of this information will be sent to you in advance of the course and this will have requirements for the first day.

Please note: The ideal fabric for patchwork & appliqué is dress-weight 100% cotton. Furnishing fabric can be too heavy, and if fabric has a synthetic content(like polycotton) it doesn’t crease so nicely for flat seams!
