Patchwork & Quilting for Beginners                                                      Updated for 2023

Discover the pleasure of cutting up fabric and sewing it back together again in creative ways, we have a lot of fun! This course will run monthly on Saturdays (to include those who work). For details of course dates and costs for this September, please click the New Leisure Class Information link on the Homepage.

Course content
There are numerous different patchwork & quilting techniques and this course covers the most popular using both hand and machine methods. The techniques you learn and the samples you make can be put together to make a sampler quilt in your own choice of colour, size and style. (The course includes a session on colour and choosing fabric to colour-coordinate your samples). Click on the Leisure Class Gallery link to see quilts from previous Beginner classes. All skills are taught progressively to build up knowledge and experience, so the course is suitable for absolute beginners.

Additional costs
Students will need their own fabric, though it is not necessary to buy this in advance as advice will be given and the cost can be spread throughout the course. For the second and third terms students will need a sewing machine. I have some available to use in class, but it is preferable for students to have confidence using their own. If you are thinking of buying a new machine, get in touch as I can give you some advice on what functions are useful for patchwork & quilting. Rotary cutting equipment is also needed for the second term, but again I can advise on what to buy in time for Christmas!

Additional support

Students are supported with handouts on the various techniques and I have a library of over 300 books available to borrow. I also keep a well stocked cupboard of essential items for students to borrow, so if you forget something it’s not the end of the world!

Venue

This course will be held in my new studio which has off-street parking and level access. People will need to bring their own lunch, but tea, coffee and biscuits are provided and a microwave is available for warming food.
